Hunter Valley Shiraz

Shiraz has been grown in the Hunter Valley for well over a century, and First Creek has been making it here since 1998. Under Liz Silkman, four times Hunter Valley Winemaker of the Year and Halliday Winemaker of the Year for 2025, our Shiraz follows the classic Hunter style: medium-bodied, earthy and savoury rather than big and jammy, with red fruit, spice and soft, supple tannins. Every current-release Hunter Valley Shiraz we make is right here, from the easy-drinking Classic to our Single Vineyard wines.

Frequently asked questions

What is Hunter Valley Shiraz like?
It is a medium-bodied, savoury style. Expect earthy red fruit, gentle spice and soft, fine tannins, which makes it more elegant and food-friendly than the bigger, riper Shiraz from warmer regions.
How is Hunter Valley Shiraz different from Barossa Shiraz?
Hunter Shiraz is lighter, more savoury and earthy, with softer tannins. Barossa Shiraz is fuller, riper and more powerful. Both are excellent, they are just different styles.
Is Shiraz dry or sweet?
Our Shiraz is dry. It has ripe red-fruit flavour that can seem generous, but there is no added sweetness.
What food pairs with Hunter Valley Shiraz?
Roast lamb and beef, game, charcuterie and hard cheese are natural matches. The medium body also suits grilled vegetables and mushroom dishes.
How long can you cellar Hunter Valley Shiraz?
The Classic is lovely now and over a few years. Hunter Shiraz is famously age-worthy, so our Single Vineyard and Winemaker's Reserve wines will develop for a decade or more in a cool, dark cellar.
Who makes First Creek's Shiraz?
Liz Silkman and the Silkman family team. Liz is a four-time Hunter Valley Winemaker of the Year and Halliday Winemaker of the Year for 2025.
